The economy tops the minds of voters, but there is a split on whether the economy is doing well, and more than half say they have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic shutdowns, according to CNN exit polling.

The most critical issue to voters:

  • Economy: About 1/3.
  • Racial inequality: About 1/5.
  • Pandemic: 1/6.
  • Healthcare: 1/10.
  • Crime and violence: 1/10.

President Donald Trump supporters are more likely to call the economy most critical at about 60% than Joe Biden supporters about 10%. Biden supporters cite coronavirus (35%) as their most critical issue, which is six times more than Trump supporters (5%).

Somewhat surprisingly, almost twice as many say they are better off today than four years ago (4/10) than say they are worse off (2/10).

This is an election with high voter turnout, including record-shattering numbers in mail-in and early voting. Just 4% voters say they made up their mind late, according to the exit poll.

And, on par with 2008's record-setting turnout, 1 in 8 voters say this is the first time they have voted.

CNN Exit Polls sampled 7,774 Election Day voters and 4,919 interviews with early and absentee voters conducted by phone. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
