Former Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala is the predicted winner in the race to represent Florida's 27th Congressional District, a Democratic pickup as the party tries to regain control of the House.
NBC News made the call around 8 p.m. ET, projecting Shalala — who worked in the Clinton administration — defeated Republican Maria Elvira Salazar, a former news anchor.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., currently holds the seat but is retiring.
Florida's 27th District encompasses much of Miami and its surrounding area.
Democrats entered Tuesday needing a net gain of at least 23 seats to win back the House majority.
