President Donald Trump's next fight with Congress likely will be over funding for his much-touted wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, The Hill reports.
If Congress cannot pass a funding bill by the end of September, the government will shut down. For this they'll need at least some Democratic support, but the party has adamantly refused to support any legislation involving the wall.
"I don't see Democrats going along with anything that funds the wall," an unnamed senior House Democratic aide told the Hill.
"I think the president has spent a lot of capital this past month, so I don't know how effective the bully pulpit would be at this point," a Republican House aide said.
Although Trump and some in his administration have voiced their support for a "good shutdown," Republicans are looking for at least eight Democrats to avoid a filibuster delaying the vote, even if it means leaving out funding for the wall, which some members of the GOP have expressed doubts about.
"The construction of a physical wall on the southern border will never be the solution. The only way to secure the border is through the use of modern technology and a comprehensive strategy for patrolling the border," Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., said in July.
"My sense is that if the border wall will be part of this package, it's a push that's mostly coming from the White House, and it's a way to get more Republicans on board," said a senior GOP aide, who also said that "This is the cleanup work we have to do just to get through the month."
