President Donald Trump declared Thursday that "we're going to protect our Second Amendment" after retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens said it should be repealed because it was "a relic of the 18th Century."
"We want to protect our Second Amendment," Trump told cheering construction workers in Richland, Ohio, as he announced his $200 billion infrastructure plan. "We're going to protect our Second Amendment."
In an op-ed piece in The New York Times on Tuesday, Stevens, 97, a conservative who retired in 2010, said that Saturday's anti-gun violence "demonstrators should seek more effective and more lasting reform.
"They should demand a repeal of the Second Amendment," said Stevens, who was nominated in 1975 by President Gerald Ford.
But President Trump vowed Thursday: "That's not going to happen."
