Democrats have put together a wide-ranging contingency plan if special counsel Robert Mueller is fired or President Donald Trump takes other actions to quash the investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, NBC News reported on Wednesday.
The concern has taken on a fresh urgency in recent days as the probe has apparently tightened around Trump, with former personal attorney Michael Cohen pleading guilty to eight counts and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort being found guilty on eight counts of tax evasion and bank fraud.
Trump reportedly also feels emboldened both to punish those involved in the investigation and to influence it directly.
The top aim of the contingency plan would be to prevent Mueller’s documents from being destroyed and his team disbanded within a 24-hour time frame, according to interviews with lawmakers, congressional aides and Democratic operatives involved in the planning.
Senate Democrats would demand a floor vote on a bill retroactively protecting Mueller and his materials, while Democratic congressmen would contact a list of sympathetic Republicans who have indicated privately that they’d be willing to act should Trump make such a move, according to NBC.
At the same time, rallies would be hastily scheduled at more than 900 locations across the nation for 5 p.m., if Mueller is fired before 2 p.m. or noon the following day if he is fired later in the day.
More than 350,000 people have already RSVP'd online to attend such snap demonstrations.
Planning for such emergency actions began more than a year ago, after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russia inquiry and then appointed a special counsel.
