A Rochester, New Hampshire, town hall event got off to a controversial start when a man called for the expulsion of Muslims.

After brief opening remarks, Trump began taking questions.

Here is the exchange with the first man Trump called on:

Man: I'm from White Plains. Amen. OK. We have a problem in this country. It's called Muslims. We know our current president is one. We know he's not even an American. His birth certificate, man.

Trump: We need this question.

Man: But anyway, we have training camps growing where they to kill us.

Trump: Uh-huh.

Man: That's my question. When can we get rid of them?

Trump: We're going to be looking at a lot of different things and a lot of people are saying that and a lot of people are saying that bad things are happening out there. We're going to be looking at that and plenty of other things.

CNN analyst David Gergen, a former adviser to presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Clinton, said Trump gave "a dismissive response" that "could be seen as dangerous."

"I think a sensitive person would have said look there are many, many good Muslims in this country. We're going to be looking at a lot of ways to deal with that but let's come back to the fundamental, which George W. Bush did right after 9/11," Gergen said on "Anderson Cooper 360."

"You have to embrace diversity in the society, and Muslims are very important Americans."

Trump himself has in the past questioned whether Obama was born in the United States, but has brushed aside questions about his past remarks during his presidential campaign.

Andy Dean, former president of Trump Productions, said Trump did not agree with the man and had laughed him off.

"There was a lunatic in the audience, and Donald Trump laughed off the crazy person, Dean said.
