Gingrich: Trump Deal With Dems Was to Avoid 'Partisan Infighting'

President Donald Trump made a deal with Democratic leaders because he did not want Americans to see "partisan infighting" from Democrats and Republicans in the wake of the hurricane damage in Texas, according to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

"He had just been to Houston twice, he saw how big the devastation was, he knew that (Hurricane) Irma was coming to Florida, and he really didn't want the country to watch Washington get bogged down again in partisan infighting," Gingrich said Monday on Fox News "The Story."

"So I think he just said to himself, if I can get everything cleaned up for 90 days, if I can get the money for Houston right now, and if I can show the ability to get something actually done in Washington, all of that will help the country and will move us in the right direction."

Gingrich added, "I think that, sincerely, he is wrestling with how to make America great again. I think he was very frustrated, and coming out of the summer with the inability to get things done on a partisan basis."

Gingrich did not know if Trump met with Republican leadership before he made the deal.

"Sometimes he moves so rapidly, that no one has advance warning, not his chief of staff, I mean literally no one," Gingrich said in the interview.

The Republican Party is not the president's focus, Gingrich said.

"I think Trump sees himself as an American figure. Trump is a Republican, but he doesn't get up in the morning and say 'My number one job is to guide the Republican Party.'"

A tax cut by Thanksgiving is a priority, but Trump may have "real trepidation" that Republicans can't pass it; however, according to Gingrich, working with Democrats will also be a difficult task.

"There aren't many things he (Trump) can agree with Schumer on that actually have substance. Schumer represents a very liberal party. Schumer would like to have a tax increase, not a tax cut. Schumer would like to have more power in Washington, and if you look at what the Trump team is doing in terms of cutting red tape and cutting regulations, that is not Schumer and Pelosi's world. That is Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell's world," Gingrich said.

On Friday, the former speaker praised Trump's deal with the Democrats, calling it "an immediate tactical move by the president to get some momentum."
