President Donald Trump is hosting a meeting on Tuesday with lawmakers, law enforcement and various others to discuss sanctuary cities, The Daily Caller reports.
Trump will meet with Vice President Mike Pence, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, adviser Stephen Miller, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Tom Homan, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, several Republican members of congress and state law enforcement officials, among others.
"Lawless sanctuary jurisdictions obstruct immigration enforcement and release previously-incarcerated criminal aliens into our communities to prey on innocent victims," the White House said in a statement, according to Politico. "The President and his administration look forward to hearing from law enforcement officials about the threats sanctuary cities pose to innocent Americans, and discussing every lawful tool available to hold these dangerous jurisdictions accountable. Our communities should be sanctuaries for Americans, not safe havens for criminals."
Last week, the GOP leadership ignored Trump's calls to defund sanctuary cities, agreeing to include the funding in a must-pass spending bill set for next week.
"House and Senate leadership has rolled over and played dead on border security. When it comes to a border wall, they say it is not our problem. When it comes to funding sanctuary cities, they say it is not our problem. What they are essentially saying is we are going to pass bills with more Democrats than Republicans," an unnamed senior GOP aide told the Daily Caller. "This is a sign to administration that leadership doesn't care what the White House wants. Even though GOP members ran on these issues. Conservatives mean it. The administration means it."
