President Donald Trump said Friday he'll let White House Chief of Staff John Kelly "make that call" about what to do with security clearance for Trump son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner.
In a joint news conference with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the White House, Trump was asked if he'd grant a waiver to Kushner amid changes instituted by Kelly after the resignation of top aide Rob Porter.
Porter had been operating on an interim security clearance for a year before he left over allegations that he abused his ex-wives.
"He has been treated unfairly," Trump said of Kushner. "He is a high quality person. He works for nothing. Nobody ever reports that. But he gets zero. He doesn't get a salary."
Trump also complained the security clearance system for the White House is "broken," but said he won't interfere with Kelly's decisions on the matter.
"That will be up to General Kelly," Trump said. "General Kelly respects Jared a lot. General Kelly will make that call. I won't make that call. … But Jared's doing some very important things for our country. "
