Paul Winfree, director of budget policy and deputy director of President Donald Trump’s Domestic Policy Council, has resigned from his post, according to a senior administration official who spoke with Axios.
Winfree has been telling friends and colleagues he will return to the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank in Washington, D.C., where he will run economic policy. He’s also told those close to him he plans to start his own policy consulting business.
Before joining the Trump administration, Winfree served as the director of an institute devoted to economic policy.
Winfree played a significant role in writing Trump’s first budget proposal this spring.
He’s the second senior official from the Trump administration to announce a departure in the last three days. Dina Powell, Trump’s top national security adviser, on Friday announced she would stay at the White House for one more year before returning home to New York.
