Amid Russia's expulsion of 60 diplomats and closing the U.S. consulate in St. Petersburg, some top Trump administration officials have been pushing for tougher sanctions in response, The New York Times reported.
Sources crediting the work of the former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who was reportedly able to generate acceptance of stricter actions against Vladimir Putin's regime.
During a State Department briefing Thursday, spokeswoman Heather Nauert ripped Russia's moves as having "no justification" because "Russia is responsible for that horrific attack on the British citizen and his daughter."
"We reserve the right to respond," Nauert added to reporters. "Russia has decided to further isolate itself. We're reviewing options."
