Six Republicans have signed onto a bipartisan letter pledging to accept the results of the 2024 election.
The signers pledge that once the 2024 presidential election is over and all legal means to challenge election results in the courts have been exhausted, they will acknowledge the election winner certified at the joint meeting of Congress in January 2025 as the legitimate president of the United States, attend the president’s inauguration ceremony in person and serve as a voice for calm and reconciliation and speaking out against those who endorse or engage in violence that harms people, property, or public spaces.
The letter was spearheaded by Reps. Josh Gottenheimer, D-N.J., and Don Bacon, R-Neb.
Aside from Bacon, the Republicans who signed on are Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, Pa., Mike Lawler, N.Y., Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Ore., Nick LaLota, N.Y. and Anthony D’Esposito, N.Y. Bacon and Fitzpatrick voted to certify the 2020 election results, while the other four were not in Congress.
"Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have a responsibility to demonstrate true leadership ahead of this critical election and serve as a voice for calm," Gottheimer said in a statement.
Bacon who is running in a competitive district in Nebraska, said we should respect election results in America.
"We fight hard to win during campaigns and then respect the results when the votes are counted," Bacon said. "We are the greatest country in the world, and we are governed by the rule of law. The citizens are sovereign, and they decide."
Democrats who signed the letter include Reps. Don Davis, N.C., Jared Golden, Maine, and Elissa Slotkin, Mich., who is running for Senate.
