The head of the Democratic Party said Wednesday he had no knowledge about the infamous dossier put together on President Donald Trump until this week.
The Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign reportedly paid for the dossier written by a former British intelligence agent last year. DNC chairman Tom Perez spoke about the issue during an event at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics.
When asked directly if the DNC knew what was in the dossier before last November's election, Perez said, "Well, again, you're gonna have to ask folks who were at the DNC at that time. I learned about the dossier a few days ago."
Perez took over the DNC in February.
CNN reported on Perez's comments.
Perez noted that he's "befuddled" as to why the issue of the Trump dossier is making so many headlines this week.
"Here's a news flash: candidates conduct research on their opponents and in the case of Donald Trump, the imperative for that is, to not do that is political malpractice," Perez said. "Why? Because Donald Trump refused to release so many documents."
Perez also accused Trump and his campaign of having a shady background with Russia.
