Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, a Democrat, said in a recent interview that if Democrats retake the House in November, they “should proceed” with impeaching President Donald Trump, if they have grounds to do so.
During an interview on CNN on Sunday, host Jake Tapper pointed out that many Democratic voters support impeaching Trump should the party retake the House in the upcoming midterm elections, and asked Patrick if he supports it.
"Yeah. If the grounds are there, then we should proceed, and I think there's a lot of basis to believe that the grounds are there," Patrick responded. "But I don't think that's the first order of business."
The former governor also said that "it's mind blowing to have people speak seriously" about him running for president in 2020, but said that he’ll make a decision about that “in due course.”
"The speculation isn't helpful,” he added. “It's incredibly touching and I've had messages and encouragement from all over the country and some from around the world, from friends and from total strangers -- it's extraordinary.”
Patrick said his focus now is on helping Democrats running in the midterm elections and encouraging Americans to “get up off the sidelines” and vote.
