Democrats are more trusting of the legislative body of the federal government and Republicans say they’re less so, though Americans in general do not have a great deal of trust in either the legislative or executive branch, according to the latest Gallup poll.
The shift comes as Democrats have gained control of the House.
The poll’s findings include:
- 45 percent of Democrats say they trust the legislative branch, compared to 33 percent in 2018
- 33 percent of Republicans say they trust the legislative branch, compared to 48 percent in 2018
- Independents’ trust in the legislative branch remains stable, 36 percent today versus 39 percent in 2018
- Americans trust the judicial branch the most at 69 percent
- Ninety percent of Republicans have a great deal or a fair amount of trust in the executive branch, compared with 9 percent of Democrats
- Eighty-three percent of Republicans trust the judicial branch, compared with 56 percent of Democrats
The poll of 1,525 adults was conducted Sept. 3–15, with 70 percent by cellphone and 30 percent by landline. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
