House Democrats are considering multiple articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, including charging him with abuse of power and contempt of Congress, according to sources familiar with their deliberations,
With the impeachment inquiry proceedings to go public next week, Democrats are considering the abuse of power charges, for efforts to push Ukraine's government to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, as well as the 2016 election, reports ABC News.
In addition, the contempt of Congress charge is being considered because of the Trump administration's refusal to allow witnesses to testify in the House committees' investigation.
There is also an obstruction of justice charge being considered concerning Trump's efforts to obstruct former special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, according to ABC's sources.
Any charges will be decided based on the ongoing inquiry. In the past, Presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton have also faced multiple articles of impeachment. Once the House Judiciary Committee reviews the gathered information, they will send the articles, if approved, on to the full House for consideration.
The article accusing Trump with obstruction of Congress could be like the one used against Nixon. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office has refused comment on the potential articles, and she has not endorsed any of the charges.
“The focus is on what’s in front of us right now: making the public case about the president’s abuse of power and his actions to undermine the 2020 election,” a senior Democratic leadership aide told ABC News.
Some lawmakers are also supporting charging While some lawmakers also support charging Trump with violations of the Constitution's Emoluments Clause but others want the push to focus on Ukraine.
