Dem Accused of Sending Spy ‘Volunteers’

Friday, 02 September 2011 11:14 AM EDT

A spokesman for Bob Turner, the Republican candidate running in a heated race for the New York congressional seat vacated by former Rep. Anthony Weiner, has accused Turner’s Democratic challenger of sending spy “volunteers” into his camp, reports the New York Post.

The Democrat, Assemblyman David Weprin, “is sending young people into Turner campaign headquarters pretending to be volunteers or college reporters,” said Turner rep William O’Reilly. “We have caught four of them already. Only a career politician scrambling to save his hide would sink to such a low.”

Weprin’s team claimed to know nothing about the accusation.
A recent poll showed both candidates tied with 42 percent of voter support. A July poll put Weprin ahead with 43 percent of the vote, with Turner trailing at 35 percent.

The change in Weprin’s fortunes could be partially explained by an embarrassing New York Daily News interview in which the fiscally focused candidate flubbed basic knowledge of the national debt. The day after it was published, Weprin blamed Tropical Storm Irene for his cancelation of a debate with Turner, although the storm had abated by then and did not appear to be an obstacle.
