WH Adviser: Democrats Gaining Steam in Senate Races

Thursday, 30 October 2014 12:31 PM EDT

Senior White House adviser Dan Pfeiffer claimed on Wednesday that the chances of Democrats winning Senate races in Iowa, Georgia, and Colorado have greatly increased in the final stretch before the elections.

He told Bloomberg Politics that Democrats are "strengthening their position in the last few days. I think we feel good about where we’re going."

Republican Joni Ernst is facing Rep. Bruce Braley in Iowa, while GOP candidate David Perdue faces off against Michelle Nunn in Georgia and Republican Rep. Cory Gardner battles incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Udall in Colorado.

The GOP is hoping to capture at least six Senate seats to wrest control of the Senate on Nov. 4.

"It’s going to be very close, but I think we always try to assign the latest thing in the news to be the cause of the race when politics is really driven by fundamentals," he said, referring to the Ebola crisis.

"It’s going to come down to turnout, and if we can get our voters out, we’re going to win and keep the Senate."

Asked whether the Ebola outbreak in the United Sates will hurt Democratic candidates in the midterms, Pfeiffer replied, "I don’t think so," while noting that the White House tries to separate its policy on the spread of the deadly disease "from politics.”

Pfeiffer also downplayed the fact that vulnerable Democratic candidates have not asked President Barack Obama to campaign for them, especially in Iowa where victory in the Democratic caucuses in 2008 led to his eventual presidential nomination, according to The Hill.

"At the end of the day, he’s thinking about this the same way we thought about our campaigns in 2008 and 2012, which is data oriented, results driven," Pfeiffer said.
"And as much as he likes to campaign, he likes to win more. And if the best way to win is to be involved in more targeted ways, he’s – we’re happy to do that."
