Democrats have prepared an emergency plan in the event special counsel Robert Mueller is fired or President Donald Trump takes other steps to end the Russia investigation, NBC News is reporting.
If Mueller is ousted, the top concern in the first 24 hours would be to prevent his documents from being destroyed and his team of investigators from being disbanded, the network news reported.
NBC News attributed its information to nearly a dozen sources, including lawmakers and attorneys involved in the planning.
"We’ve had a lot of conversations about how exactly and who and when and where," Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said.
Upon being informed of a Mueller’s dismissal, the plans call for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to consult with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., according to NBC News.
At the same time, Democrats would demand a bill retroactively protecting Mueller. Democrats would also contact a list of Republicans who have indicated privately they would be willing to act if Mueller was fired.
Coons is predicting that “within minutes” of a Mueller dismissal, dozens of GOP lawmakers would object.
If Mueller is fired before 2 p.m. on any given day, protest rallies would be held at 5 p.m. Should he be fired in the evening, the demonstrations would be staged at noon the following day.
The plan also includes a scenario where Trump fires top Justice Department officials, including Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who refused to oust Mueller.
Following a Mueller or Rosenstein ouster, Democratic lawmakers would call for obstruction of justice hearings, the network news said.
News of the contingency plan by Democrats follow former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort being found guilty of eight financial crime charges and the president’s former attorney Michael Cohen pleading guilty to campaign violations in a hush-money scheme.
