Democrats aim to use the family separation issue for political advantage during the midterm elections, White House senior communications adviser Mercedes Schlapp said Tuesday.
Democrats wanting to use the issue is an "emotional, divisive political play" and "incredibly irresponsible," Schlapp told "Fox & Friends."
The problem can be solved by addressing "legal loopholes," Schlapp said.
"If we want to see significant change, we need to close those legal loopholes so that we are able to detain and swiftly remove these family units who are coming in illegally," Schlapp said.
Families who are separated at the border are apart for "between 5 to 10 days," Schlapp said in the "Fox & Friends" interview.
Democrats should join up with Republicans on immigration bills that are coming up for votes, Schlapp said.
President Donald Trump also took aim at Democrats on Tuesday.
"Democrats are the problem," Trump tweeted. "They don’t care about crime and want illegal immigrants, no matter how bad they may be, to pour into and infest our country."
