Democrats suffered a net loss of 1,042 state and federal posts, including congressional and state legislative seats, governorships and the presidency during President Barack Obama's eight years in office, Fox News reports.
While Obama's broad appeal got him elected as president twice, his coattails were not long enough for other Democrats to ride into office, according to the news network.
Fox News reports that during Obama's White House tenure:
- Democratic U.S. Senate seats dropped from 55-46, while their share of the House went from 256 seats to 194.
- Democratic governorships went from 28 to 16.
- Some 958 state legislative seats were lost by the Democrats.
- Republican Donald Trump was elected president
"We're not even a national party at this point," Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, said as he made a failed run for House minority leader. "We have some support on the coasts, but we've lost the support of middle America, and we've got to make some changes. So I'm pulling the fire alarm here, because the house is on fire."
The New York Post claims Democrats paid the ultimate price during Obama's presidency.
"The political cadavers of more than 1,000 Democratic incumbents and nominees, from Hillary Clinton on down, confirm that Obama is poison at the polls," the newspaper said.
