Public surveys have shown that Democrats are harming their chances to do well in midterm elections by emphasizing the need to impeach President Donald Trump if they win back the House of Representatives, top Democratic pollster Pat Caddell said on Sunday.
Speaking to host John Catsimatidis on his radio show “The Cats Roundtable” on AM 970 in New York, Caddell said there are indications in polls that “voters who may not be happy with Trump but are really negative on the idea of an impeachment and tying the country up for two years as a political effort to get rid of someone they do not like.”
He added that “Americans fundamentally do not want to see constitutional processes weaponized as part of the political opposition” and said the lesson should be learned from Republican efforts to impeach President Bill Clinton, which did not work out so well at the ballot box for the GOP.
Caddell also said that “Rasmussen had a poll that showed that, two to one, voters [believe impeachment] would hurt the economy, which is doing quite well in their eyes.”
Caddell also said that traditionally midterms are elections that favor the “out” party, but “I’m not sure this is an ordinary midterm, any more than 2016 was an ordinary presidential election.”
Another concern for Democrats, he said, was that the party “seems to have deserted the center [and] is moving ever further to the left, being pulled by their presidential candidates.”
Caddell concluded that “we’re in for quite a ride in the next 60 days or so” until the midterm elections.
