There are now a dozen competitive Senate races as Democrats try to take over the chamber thanks to a "green tsunami" in campaign spending from the left.

Politico reported that six months after Republican leaders warned that Democrats could outraise and outspend them leading up to the November election, Democrats are now doing just that.

Opposition to President Donald Trump, anger at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and reaction to the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the effort to replace her have led to a wave of small donations to Democrats, which is leading to big spending. Republicans hold a 53-47 advantage in the Senate, but that advantage is now in jeopardy.

Politico reported that three people who have knowledge of an April meeting that involved National Republican Senatorial Committee Executive Director Kevin McLaughlin said he warned of a "green tsunami" of spending from Democrats in the fall. That spending is here, with some Democrats raising tens of millions of dollars more than they raised ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

The result is that 12 Senate races, including Alaska, Kansas, South Carolina, Iowa, and Maine, are now in play.

"The money is indicative [of] how much energy there is on their side, and the lack thereof on our side," Republican consultant Mike DuHaime told Politico. "I think we're finding that Trump — the energy for Trump — is not always transferable, the same way it wasn't transferable for Democrats from [President Barack] Obama."

RealClearPolitics estimates that 47 Senate races are likely Democrat or leaning Democrat, while 46 are likely Republican or leaning Republican. That leaves seven races labeled as toss-ups, in Georgia, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, and South Carolina. In all but one of those races (Michigan), a Republican is the incumbent.
