Democrats are positioned to take back control of the House of Representatives if their momentum keeps up in the last period of legislative work, The Hill reports.
Republicans have trailed Democrats in five of the last six generic polls, in which voters are asked to pick a generic candidate of a certain party in the upcoming election, by 11 points or more, according to Real Clear Politics. Democrats polled just slightly better in 2006, the year they retook control of Congress.
Real Clear Politics also shows that President Donald Trump’s job approval has fallen in recent weeks, following the conviction of his former campaign chairman, and the guilty plea of his former attorney.
Trump’s disapproval rating is more than 12 points higher than his approval rating in six of the last eight polls since Aug. 28, which is also three days after Sen. John McCain died. Trump’s feud with McCain was a talking point throughout the senator’s memorial services.
A GOP spokesperson told The Hill that the party isn’t worried about the upcoming midterm elections.
“We’re going to wake up and run every day as if we’re down 10 points. We’re leaving nothing to chance. But we’re confident with our great candidates who are talking about the issues that actually matter to voters, we’re going to defy history,” said Matt Gorman, National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman.
