Sen. Joe Manchin said Thursday that he "was not there yet" on whether President Donald Trump obstructed justice in the Michael Flynn investigation and that senators did not receive evidence from former FBI Director James Comey on Russian collusion in last year's election.
"I am not there yet," the West Virginia senator told Jake Tapper on CNN. He is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, before which Comey testified in an open session on Thursday.
"The thing I can tell you is comforting is that we have Bob Mueller, the special prosecutor, and Democrats and Republicans have the upmost confidence and reliability in this man, who's beyond approach.
"We are all going to take whatever he comes back — with his recommendations — and that's what we'll run with.
"He's the expert and he will be able to get into it," he said.
Comey later testified in classified session before the panel.
"Let's just say we have not heard any evidence about President Trump and collusion," Manchin would only say of the session.
"There is a lot of smoke and a lot of associates helping him in the campaign," he added. "They're getting into that in a deep way, step by step."
