House Democrats want to see the correspondence between the Pentagon and President Donald Trump that went into his decision to ban transgender individuals in the military.
In a letter to Defense Secretary James Mattis, Rep. Donald McEachin, D-Va., wrote that lawmakers want to ensure there was no "breakdown in communication."
McEachin requested various forms of documented correspondence between the White House and the Pentagon in advance of Trump's announcement of the ban in August.
"We seek access to these materials in order to determine whether the president, his national security team, and military leaders are actively coordinating policy with one another, or whether the president's transgender ban announcement reflected a breakdown in communication," McEachin wrote.
"As you now, clear communication between the White House and the Pentagon is essential to our nation's security."
McEachin said more than 100 House lawmakers signed the letter.
