Complication for Debt Ceiling: Redistricting

By    |   Tuesday, 05 July 2011 11:16 AM EDT

Congressional redistricting may throw a fly in the ointment for Republican House leaders trying to forge an agreement to raise the debt limit, The Hill reports. That’s because several GOP incumbents will have to run against each other next year.

Furthermore, the debt ceiling may turn into a litmus-test issue for some of the campaigns. Congressmen desperate to stay in office may oppose a debt-ceiling deal under virtually any conditions to stand out on the issue.

“It will affect it, because it’s more of a Republican-primary issue than a general-election issue,” Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., said of the vote to lift the debt ceiling from its present level of $14.3 trillion.

Walden is deputy chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee and cited three races in California and Illinois that could end up hinging on the debt-cap issue.
