Cindy Garcia, the wife of a Michigan man deported to Mexico, will be the guest of Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., for President Donald Trump's State of the Union speech, The Detroit News is reporting.
Garcia will attend the president's speech to Congress on Jan. 30, according to the newspaper. Her husband, Jorge, was sent back to Mexico on Monday after 30 years of living in Michigan.
He was 10 when he was brought into the U.S. by an undocumented family member, according to USA Today. Garcia had been facing an order of removal since 2009.
He had been granted extensions by earlier administrations, but because of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown, he was returned to Mexico, the newspaper said.
"This week, America watched in horror as Jorge Garcia, a father of two and husband to an American citizen, who was brought to this country at 10-years-old and has never received so much as a traffic ticket, was torn from his family and the only home he knows," Dingell said.
"The Garcia family's story is heartbreaking and infuriating. It is both a symptom of a long-broken immigration system and a new rash immigration policy that does not recognize the difference between a hardworking family man and a criminal. This must change."
Dingell said she is fighting to get the family reunited, The Detroit News added.
