Rep. Rodney Davis of Illinois accused Democrats of hypocrisy for disputing the election result for a seat in the House of Representatives from Iowa yet lambasting President Donald Trump for his challenges of the presidential race.
Davis, the ranking Republican on the House Committee of Administration, appeared on Newsmax TV’s “Spicer & Co.” Wednesday to detail the challenge by Democrat Rita Hart, who lost the race for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District to Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks by six votes. The state Board of Canvassers, comprised of three Republicans and two Democrats, certified the result unanimously on Monday.
At issue is Hart’s bypassing of any legal challenge to the seat and instead is expected to file an election contest with the Democratic-controlled House, which has the authority to conduct its own investigation and recount. It could vote to seat Hart instead of Miller-Meeks, similar to what a then-Democratic-controlled House did in 1985, when it ignored the certified election victory of Republican Rick McIntyre over incumbent Democrat Frank McCloskey by 47 votes.
It determined McCloskey won by four votes and seated him instead.
“(It’s) exactly the opposite of what they’re saying in the presidential race,” said Davis, who in November won a fifth term to represent Illinois’ 13th Congressional District in the central part of the state from Champaign to the Missouri border.
“One thing I’ve found out in my eight years in Congress is the Democrats, they have no shame when it comes to putting politics before the voters.”
Davis’ committee, which has six Democrats to three Republicans, will have jurisdiction over the matter and the 50-year-old Republican fears the Nancy Pelosi-controlled House will repeat history and deny Miller-Meeks her seat.
“She has the right to be sworn in,” Davis said. “She has the right to represent Iowa’s 2nd district. She won, according to Iowa election law. And we need the American people to stand up, help her, help us to make sure the Democrats don’t steal a seat in the Congress.”
