Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., said Congress — not President Donald Trump — should be blamed for the failure to repeal Obamacare.
"With regard to healthcare, I don't think this 2017 is a failure on the part of the president," Perdue said told CNN's "New Day" program. "I think this is clearly on the hands of U.S. Congress. Right now, we are not operating as a cohesive unit here.
"We've got to get together — Democrats and Republicans, conservative Republicans, moderate Republicans . . . everybody has to get together to solve this.
"Because healthcare is going to collapse. Obamacare is collapsing right now under its own weight."
The Washington Post reported White House officials and several GOP lawmakers were closing in on a deal on healthcare legislation with the powerful conservative House Freedom Caucus.
At least three leading figures in the group are said to be now ready to support a new plan, according to the newspaper.
Meanwhile, Perdue strongly praised Trump's accomplishments during his first 100 days in the White House.
"Consumer confidence is at a 20-year high," he said. "CEO confidence is at a 17-year high. Manufacturing confidence a 13-year high.
"What these people who are looking at the results of this president in the first 100 days are seeing hope," he said.
