Democrats need a stronger message if they’re going to win back Congress and the White House, writes the Washington Post’s Dan Balz.
“Right now, the one discernible message is opposition to President Trump,” he writes. “That might be enough to get through next year’s midterm elections, though some savvy Democratic elected officials doubt it. What’s needed is a message that attracts voters beyond the blue-state base of the party.”
Democrat Jon Ossoff last Tuesday lost the hotly contested race for the 6th Congressional District seat in Georgia to Republican Karen Handel despite a huge voter turnout in the deep-red state and millions of dollars pumped into his campaign.
Some Democrats blamed House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for a lack of leadership while others said the party wasn’t strong enough in getting its message across on jobs, healthcare and other major issues currently at the forefront of the political cycle.
“The long-running debate over the Democrats’ message probably will intensify as the party looks to 2018 and especially to 2020. It is a debate that the party needs,” writes Balz.
