New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon has cut into Gov. Andrew Cuomo's lead for the Democratic primary, but still trails him by 31 percentage points, according to a Siena College poll released Tuesday.
Among registered Democrats, 58 percent said they would vote for Cuomo, while 27 percent said they would choose Nixon.
Other details from the poll include:
- Last month, the Siena poll had Cuomo with a 47-point advantage over Nixon, with 66 percent for the governor and 19 percent for his opponent.
- Cuomo holds the sizable lead, despite his favorability rating falling to match its lowest ever for the two-time governor at 49 percent to 44 percent this month.
- Nixon has a 33 percent favorability rating and a 23 percent unfavorable rating.
The poll was conducted April 8-12 by telephone calls to 692 New York State registered voters. It has an overall margin of error of +/- 4.3 percentage points.
Nixon, an actress and activist who is best known for her role on the television series "Sex and the City," earned the endorsement of the state's Working Families Party over the weekend, according to The Hill.
If the party formally nominates Nixon as its candidate, she would appear on the November ballot even if she lost to Cuomo in the Democratic primary in September.
Cuomo is also considered a potential candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.
