President Donald Trump said on the Fox News program "Life, Liberty & Levin" on Sunday that the only reason the Democrats are denigrating the fact that a vaccine might be approved before the election is that they fear he would get credit for it.
"About three weeks ago they started hearing rumors that there would be a vaccine in super record time," Trump told host Mark Levin. "So, instead of saying, 'wow, that's great, it's going to save a lot of lives, people are going to be protected and this will all thing will end faster ' … they started denigrating it" out of fears that it would harm their electoral prospects and help his.
Trump said that the speed of the vaccine is "one of the greatest things that anyone has ever done … if this were a typical administration, this vaccine wouldn't be ready for two or three years, because of the FDA [Food and Drug Administration] process. ... I have totally changed the FDA process, same safety but the speed is from a different world. We should have the vaccine approved very soon."
The president added that there are many great pharmaceutical companies involved in developing a vaccine, and "they are not going to put themselves on the line [by cutting corners on safety]. They would have tremendous liability."
Trump said that once approved, the vaccine will be distributed very quickly and would be given first to senior citizens, who are the most vulnerable to the virus.
