New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, while the state's new coronavirus cases are beginning to fall, the number of deaths is still "obnoxiously and terrifyingly high," during a press conference.
In the past 24 hours, Cuomo said 299 residents have passed due to coronavirus, a number higher than the 289 deaths the state reported Friday.
Of those newly reported deaths, 276 happened in hospitals and 23 in nursing homes.
"That number has remained obnoxiously and terrifyingly high," Cuomo said of the death toll at a press conference Saturday in Queens. "It’s still not dropping at the rate that we would like to see it drop, it even went up a little bit.
"That is bad news."
New York also reported 831 new coronavirus cases Saturday, following a week that averaged roughly 900 new cases per day.
"That is still an unacceptably high rate," Cuomo said.
As of Saturday afternoon, New York state has 308,314 confirmed coronavirus cases, including 18,909 deaths.
