The chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee thinks spending "billions of dollars" on a border wall isn't the right way go to bolster national security.
In a telephone town hall, Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado shot down President Donald Trump's southern border wall as too expensive and not necessarily the best strategy to seal the nation's southern border.
Politico posted audio of the remarks.
"As far as the wall goes, I believe we have to have border security, but I do think billions of dollars on a wall is not the right way to proceed," he told a voter, Politico reported.
"I don't support a tariff to pay for any kind of wall."
By one estimate, the wall could cost upward of $21.6 billion.
Gardner has been skeptical about the border wall last month as well, telling reporters he didn't think a wall was "the best idea," the Colorado Springs Gazette reported at the time.
His most recent criticism comes in the wake of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's blunt prediction that Mexico wouldn't pay for the multi-billion-dollar project, as Trump repeatedly has promised.
