A Republican senator has created an "online hotline" for conservative groups in his home state of Texas to report abuses by the IRS.
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, has added
a page to his official Senate website asking groups to let him know if they were subjected to unnecessary hassles while applying for tax-exempt status.
The IRS admitted earlier this month that agents had targeted groups with such key words as "tea party" and "patriot" in their names for additional scrutiny of their political activities. Groups that fall under the 501(c)(4) section of the tax code are allowed to engage in some political activity as long as it is not their primary purpose.
"If you have been targeted by the IRS, I invite you to share your story here," Cornyn says on the website. "Let’s make it clear that Texans will not stand for the kind of behavior typically associated with corrupt tin-pot dictators – not with the greatest democracy in the world."
The site includes a video of Cornyn talking about groups that were targeted and a section of quotes from members of those groups and media articles. It concludes with an online form titled "How did the IRS target you?"
