Retiring Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., on Sunday lashed out at President Donald Trump’s standoff with congressional Democrats over border wall funding as a “made-up fight” that’s more “spectacle” than policy.
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” the frequent Trump critic said even if Trump won his demand for $5 billion to build a wall, “our borders are going to be insecure.”
“This is a made-up fight so that the president can look like he's fighting,” Corker said, adding: “It's not just about the money. It's about what we're spending it on. We can secure our borders. We can solve this problem.”
“This is something that is unnecessary,” he declared. “It's a spectacle and, candidly, it's juvenile. The whole thing is juvenile. I want to see real border security and that's why I'm disappointed where we've ended up at the end of this Congress.”
Corker said the more pressing and important issue is Trump’s “precipitous” decision to pull American troops from Syria.
“In Syria, this was a low-cost situation for us .. to continue to root out ISIS, but also to keep in check what's happening there with Russia and Iran,” he said. “[T]o leave it when you're within a couple of months of doing something that is very important in the fight against ISIS and the president knows that… jerk the rug out from under two months in advance, that's hard to understand.”
