President Donald Trump walked to a fire-damaged St. John’s Episcopal Church in a gesture to “stand against arsonists and anarchists,” White House counselor Kellyanne Conway says.
In an interview on Sinclair Broadcasting's “America This Week” aired Tuesday, Conway defended the visit to an institution known as “the president’s church” — and said Trump didn’t know what security measures had been taken to clear the area of George Floyd protesters from Lafayette Park.
“He had gone to show a line had been crossed,” she said, adding, “He wanted to take a stand against the arsonists and anarchists.”
“You saw a president there express what’s on so many people’s minds… ‘how long will this last, how far will they go’… setting a church fire is very disheartening and disgraceful,” she said.
According to Conway, it was "heretical" to question Trump's faith, and “disheartening and disgraceful” to criticize his holding up a bible as he stood in front of the famed church.
“They don't know what's in the president's heart,” she said of critics. “That itself is heretical and they shouldn’t say that.”
