Conway: Americans Don't Want Shutdown Over DACA

National polls show that most Americans favor a solution for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, but they do not want the government to shut down over it, presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway said Friday.

"It really is regrettable that the Democrats are willing to shut down the government, which means not just saying no to President [Donald] Trump, no to our military, saying no to a longer term extension of the children's health program," Conway told Fox News' "Fox & Friends."

DACA has a March deadline, and Trump has said he is willing to work on it, she added.

"I find it really regrettable that for petty partisan political reasons and also as an audition for 2020, [they are] playing to the left wing base," said Conway. "You have otherwise responsible members of the Senate being willing to shut down the government for this reason. It truly is regrettable. Also opioid treatment centers are at risk.

"Sherrod Brown in Ohio, who is up for re-election this year and has one of the most massive opioid abuse and death problems in this nation, stood with the president in the oval office just last week as the president signed the act into law. Is he going to go home and tell people in Ohio because of DACA I am not there to fund these opioid treatment centers? It's regrettable."

Meanwhile, Conway said she disagrees with a report that a government shutdown would benefit Democrats with the 2018 midterm elections approaching, as many people would blame Trump.

"Republicans are going to run on the tax cuts and they are going to show what unified government looks like," said Conway. "The tax cuts are wearing well because people were lied to.

"They were lied to for months, that this won't pass and if it passes it only benefits the wealthy . . . under Donald Trump's leadership and really just a straight party line vote which I think is also unfortunate, you saw Democrats resist being on the right side of history's massive tax plan."

Conway also discussed the growing call to release a memo alleging U.S. government surveillance abuses through the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, saying those who have seen the memo are "outraged."

"All those calling for one year plus of transparency and accountability and let's learn everything we can, let's not leave any stone unturned when it comes to Russia and collusion and shenanigans during the campaign last year, I hope that they stick with that today," said Conway.

Conway also discussed Trump's upcoming address to the March for Life, which will be delivered by satellite video feed Friday.
