Apparently responding to criticism that his election campaign has already spent more than three-fourths of the contributions it collected over the past two years, President Donald Trump posted a tweet on Tuesday defending the strategy.
“My Campaign spent a lot of money up front in order to compensate for the false reporting and Fake News concerning our handling of the China Virus,” Trump wrote. “Now they see the GREAT job we have done, and we have 3 times more than we had 4 years ago - & are up in polls. Lots of $’s & ENERGY!”
Trump’s remarks on Twitter came after The New York Times reported a day earlier that his campaign has already spent more than $800 million of the $1.1 billion it raised from the start of 2019 through July, almost completely depleting what had once been considered an impressive war chest.
Fundraising for Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden, meanwhile, has increased significantly in the final weeks of the campaign, Politico reported.
Biden and the Democratic National Committee took in a record $365 million in contributions last month, which was more than double the $165 million Trump’s campaign collected during July.
The Trump campaign has not yet reported its August fundraising numbers.
