As efforts continue to try to save those covered under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, conservatives and Democrats are split on whether to grant "Dreamers" a path to citizenship, The Hill reported.

Conservatives maintain granting citizenship to undocumented immigrants amounts to "amnesty" for those who broke the law when they came into the U.S., the website noted. But Democrats insist a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients is non-negotiable.

And President Donald Trump, who appeared close to a deal with Democratic leaders over DACA, said: "We're not looking at citizenship. We're not looking at amnesty. We're looking at allowing people to stay here,."

Meanwhile, NPR reported one of the bills being touted by Democrats would allow a path for citizenship for those in the program, and noted that the president's base is overwhelming opposed to the idea.

"I know the people that were strong Trump supporters, that were on his bandwagon early on," said Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa. "They came on board because, build a wall, enforce the border, enforce immigration law, no amnesty ever. And if they see amnesty coming out of the White House, then that's the one thing that will crack his base."

And Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., chairman of the Freedom Caucus, said he opposes the bill, called the Dream Act, "because it's viewed as an amnesty bill."

But Democrats are not ready to budge on giving Dreamers a path to citizenship, The Hill reported.

"I would think the overwhelming sentiment among Democrats is that there must be a path to citizenship — there must be," said Rep. G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C.
