A Republican congressman from San Diego repaid his campaign nearly $49,000 for personal expenses, including online video games, a Hawaiian resort stay, and tuition for his kids' private school, Fox News reported.
Rep. Duncan Hunter had to take out a home loan to get the money, Fox reported.
The congressman said he took full responsibility for any misspending by his campaign, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
The Tribune said the newspaper had found Hunter's campaign also paid for oral surgery, a garage door, gas, groceries, fast food, lunches and other expenses. It noted federal law prohibits personal use of campaign funds.
Hunter's opponent in Tuesday's election, Democrat Patrick Malloy, said the congressman's announcement that he would repay the money was an empty gesture.
"Four days before the election, Hunter is trying to buy your sympathy with $49,000 in appeasement," Malloy is quoted by the Tribune.
