President Donald Trump nudged Congress on the stalled stimulus talks, imploring lawmakers to "get it done," including direct payments to Americans. Then, he turned his attention to a Jan. 4 rally to boost Republicans for Georgia's Senate runoffs.
Trump tweeted last Saturday night:
"Why isn't Congress giving our people a Stimulus Bill? It wasn't their fault, it was the fault of China. GET IT DONE, and give them more money in direct payments."
Congress is near a deal with a vote potentially to come Sunday. In the package is a $300-a-week boost for the unemployed and a one-time $600 impact payment to Americans.
Then, on Georgia's Senate runoffs, Trump added via tweet minutes later:
"As badly as we were treated in Georgia by the 'Republican' Governor and 'Republican' Secretary of State, we must have a massive victory for two great people, @KLoeffler & @sendavidperdue, on January 5th. I will be having a big Rally for them on Monday night, January 4th. WIN!"
Incumbent Sens. David Perdue, R-Ga., and Kelly Loeffler, R-Ga., are facing stiff challenges from Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock for the final two seats in the Senate. Republicans already hold 50 seats, so the GOP needs to win just one of those to maintain a slim majority in the upper chamber.
Just one day after those runoffs, a joint session of Congress is set to open and certify the Electoral College victory for Joe Biden. There is an objection planned by House Republicans and potentially a senator, but Democrats have the votes to secure Biden's victory.
