According to a new poll from CNN, the majority of Americans think President Donald Trump would lose a re-election bid, although a similar poll from his predecessor's first term turned out wrong.
- 44 percent of Americans predict that Trump won't win re-election.
- 44 percent of Americans at this point in former President Barack Obama's first term made the same prediction.
- 40 percent think Trump will win re-election.
- 44 percent said the same of Obama.
Republicans were far more likely to think Trump will win re-election, while almost all Democrats expect him to lose, as do a majority of independents. Only one in five Republicans said they thought the party should nominate another candidate in 2020.
Among potential Democratic candidates, two-thirds would support former Vice President Joe Biden for the nomination, followed by Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Democrat Elizabeth Warren.
CNN surveyed 1,014 adults in the U.S. by phone from March 22-25, with a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percentage points.
