A $100,000 check from a longtime friend, former President Bill Clinton, helped Democrat Terry McAuliffe raise nearly $5.1 million for his bid as Virginia governor in the first three months of the year.
McAuliffe, who faces GOP Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, had the funds in the bank as of March 31, according to campaign finance data reported by The Washington Post.
Named by Clinton as chairman of the Democratic National Committee, McAuliffe is long considered a strong fundraiser, The Post reports.
McAuliffe’s campaign said that 74 percent of his donations for the quarter totaled $100 or less, with 72 percent coming from Virginia residents, The Post reports.
Through Dec. 31, McAuliffe had raised $1.6 million, compared with $2 million for Cuccinelli.
The attorney general has not yet released his fundraising data for the first quarter. Full reports are due on Monday, The Post reports.
