Clay Aiken, a singer who once ran as a Democrat for a House seat from North Carolina, has backed away from his support of former Vice President Joe Biden and has endorsed Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., for the party's presidential nomination.
Aiken made his announcement in a column for USA Today.
"For 2020, for Democrats, for America, Amy Klobuchar is the answer," he wrote.
"That may sound a bit surprising to hear from someone who has, before now, been publicly supportive of a different candidate in this year's Democratic primary race. But it is a position I now state with full confidence. In this year's race for the White House, Sen. Amy Klobuchar Minnesota is the candidate we need."
Aiken maintained his support for Biden has been genuine, but he is now convinced Democrats for a "fresher voice."
"Klobuchar is that voice," he said.
"We must choose an effective messenger who not only speaks to our progressive ideals but also appeals to the many Americans who felt abandoned by us in 2016."
He said, "Klobuchar has the track record of getting things done."
However, Aiken admitted backing away from supporting Biden was a difficult decision.
