The whistleblower who filed a report that led to President Donald Trump’s impeachment spent months living under strict security measures due to threats on his life, reports The Washington Post.
Violent messages surged each time the CIA analyst, who has not been identified by the U.S. government, was targeted in tweets or public remarks by Trump and other lawmakers, reports The Post. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., tried to out the analyst several times, even reading the name of the alleged whistleblower aloud during the impeachment trial.
The analyst was driven to work by armed officers in an unmarked sedan and had to live in a no-frills hotel under surveillance by CIA security. When allowed to reenter his home, the CIA first had to sweep the location to make sure it was safe.
A former senior U.S. official involved in overseeing the whistleblower’s protection told the Post the analyst was never in immediate danger, but without security, “there is a strong possibility that grave harm would have come to him.”
The threats have reportedly subsided, according to the report, but some safety measures are still in place.
