Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., commended President Donald Trump on Thursday for getting tough on trade with China, The Hill is reporting.
Schumer's comments came while addressing the Senate.
"I don't agree with President Trump on a whole lot, but today I want to give him a big pat on the back," Schumer said. "He is doing the right thing when it comes to China."
And Schumer added that "unfortunately, previous presidents, Democrat and Republican, just stood by as China did what it did to us. President Trump is exactly right."
Trump on Thursday signed an executive memorandum imposing $60 billion in retaliatory tariffs on Chinese imports, CNBC reported.
The tariffs are designed to penalize China trade practices that Trump has maintained included stealing intellectual property from U.S. companies.
