Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer says President Trump's refugee travel ban is "appalling" and "sloppy" and he plans to call for a vote to repeal it.
"This is a blanket ban. It hurts innocent people and doesn't stop terrorism. It's just appalling," Schumer said Monday on NBC's "Today" show.
"It was done in such a sloppy and careless way. Major agencies — the Border Patrol, Customs didn't even know about it. There were major holes in how it was done. It almost seems like back-of-the envelope."
Last week, Trump signed an executive order for a 90-day ban which stops nationals from seven mostly-Muslim countries entering the U.S., as well as a 120-day stop prohibition on refugees.
Schumer of New York added Trump's action will "encourage lone wolves here in America. They have created most of the terrorism."
Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would have to okay a repeal vote for it to fly.
Schumer also said a vote to approve State Department nominee Rex Tillerson to be delayed so he can be more thoroughly grilled. He told "Today" that when Tillerson was asked about the ban "he was very mealy-mouthed" in his response.
