President Donald Trump should tell Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to “butt out of our elections” and “quit the cyber warfare interference in our democracy,” Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, tweeted Saturday.
Grassley’s comments follow an indictment by Special Counsel Robert Mueller of 13 Russians and three Russian companies for U.S. election interference in 2016 through social media propaganda aimed at helping Republican Donald Trump and harming Democrat Hilary Clinton’s prospects.
Russians reportedly created bogus Internet postings, posed online as American political activists and purchased ads fraudulently in an attempt to “sow discord in the U.S. political system, including the 2016 presidential election.”
They also communicated with “unwitting individuals” associated with Trump’s campaign and other political activists to coordinate activities.
Putin has pushed back on claims he had anything to do with an influence campaign, saying those claims were “invented, made up by people who are in opposition to President Trump with a view to shedding a negative light on what President Trump is doing.”
